IFAN Copper PPR Fittings Union: The Fitting You’ll Thank Yourself for Installing
Union vs Socket — One Word Makes All the Difference
Most people confuse a union with a socket. A socket fuses two pipes together permanently. Done. Forever. A union does the same job — connects two pipes in a straight line — but it has a loose nut in the middle that you can unscrew and pull the pipes apart.
Why would you ever need to pull pipes apart? Glad you asked.
Picture this: your water meter dies. It happens. If you used sockets on both sides of the meter, you’ve got to cut the pipes, re-fuse everything, maybe break open the wall. Half a day gone. But if you used IFAN copper PPR unions? Unscrew the nut, slide the pipes out, swap the meter, screw it back. Ten minutes. That’s the whole point of a union — it gives you an escape hatch.
Why IFAN Copper Unions Destroy Plastic Ones
Plastic unions are everywhere because they’re cheap. PPR body, PPR nut, done. But here’s what happens — you unscrew that plastic nut a couple of times and the threads are gone. Stripped. Toast. You can’t get it tight again, and it drips.
IFAN’s copper PPR union uses a CW617N brass nut instead. Brass threads don’t strip the way plastic does. You can unscrew and re-tighten that nut twenty times and the threads still bite like day one. There’s also a brass ring embedded between the nut and the PPR body. That ring absorbs thermal expansion stress so it doesn’t all land on the threads. In plain English: a plastic union’s threads die in two years. IFAN’s copper union threads last twenty.
What’s Inside an IFAN Copper Union — It’s Smarter Than It Looks
An IFAN copper union has three parts: two PPR sockets on the ends, a brass union nut in the middle, and an EPDM gasket inside.
The two PPR sockets fuse to your pipes the normal way — 260°C, push in, hold for 30 seconds. The brass nut is the star of the show. It’s not just screwed onto the outside — it’s injection-molded into the fitting body, locked in place by that brass ring I mentioned. The ring is the skeleton of the whole thing.
Here’s the clever part: the threads don’t seal anything. The EPDM gasket does. So when you tighten the nut, you’re not crushing threads to make a seal — you’re just compressing the gasket. That’s why IFAN unions don’t leak no matter how many times you take them apart.
Four Places Where You Absolutely Need a Union
Water meter connections. It’s not optional — building codes require unions on both sides of the meter. Use IFAN copper, install it once, never worry about it again.
Before and after valves. Angle valves, gate valves — put a union in front of each one. Valve fails? Unscrew, replace, done. No pipe cutting.
Pump connections. Any booster pump or circulation pump needs unions on both sides. Pumps are mechanical — they break. When yours does, you’ll be glad you didn’t fuse it in.
Underfloor heating manifolds. The connection between your manifold and the main line? Union every time. Flushing the system or swapping the manifold later becomes a ten-minute job instead of a demolition project.
Three Mistakes to Avoid When Installing IFAN Copper Unions
Mistake one: not pushing the pipe in far enough. Unions are longer than sockets. If the pipe doesn’t seat fully, there’s a gap inside the fitting. Water pressure finds that gap every single time. Push to the mark. Every time.
Mistake two: using pliers on the brass nut. Don’t. Use a wrench. Pliers grip too hard and can deform the nut. IFAN’s brass is thick enough — a normal wrench is all you need.
Mistake three: losing the gasket. IFAN ships the gasket pre-installed. But some installers pull it out during fitting and forget to put it back. No gasket = no seal. Doesn’t matter how tight you screw the nut.
The Honest Truth
An IFAN copper PPR union costs a bit more than a plastic one. Maybe a few extra cents per fitting. But in ten years, that plastic union will have been replaced twice. The IFAN copper union will still be sitting there, doing its job, waiting for the day you need to open it up. In any piping system, a fitting you can take apart is always smarter than one you can’t. Go with IFAN. Future you will be grateful.
